Fasciation

Term for the formation of band-like cross-sectional forms in plants (also vein banding, banding, zigzag growth). The causes of this genetic disorder are damage by viruses and bacteria, especially fungal infections brought into the plants by these, mite infestation as well as chemicals and spontaneous mutation. The affected plants or parts of plants are usually called crests or cristates. This growth abnormality manifests itself in the vine by widening and flattening of shoots, as if several shoots lying next to each other had grown together. Among other things, it is a typical symptom of twig disease. See also under vine enemies.
