In the New World frequently used term for a wine-producing enterprise (Estate = English possession, country estate, vineyard or property), which corresponds in the sense of château, domain or vineyard. In South Africa this has a special meaning, where Estate is the smallest unit in the box-shaped hierarchy regarding the controlled origin (Wine of Origin); then come Ward, District and Region.
I have great respect for the scope and quality of the wein.plus encyclopaedia. It is a unique place to go for crisp, sound information on terms from the world of wine.
