In the New World frequently used term for a wine-producing enterprise (Estate = English possession, country estate, vineyard or property), which corresponds in the sense of château, domain or vineyard. In South Africa this has a special meaning, where Estate is the smallest unit in the box-shaped hierarchy regarding the controlled origin (Wine of Origin); then come Ward, District and Region.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
