Term used in the New World for a winery (estate = property, country estate, vineyard or manor). Similar to Château in France, "Estate" is intended to suggest a certain quality and tradition, which implies a high standard of wine production. In South Africa, Estate is the smallest unit in the hierarchy of controlled origin (Wine of Origin), followed by Ward, District and Region. In the USA, there is the term Estate Bottled, which corresponds to the term Erzeugerabfüllung (producer bottling ) commonly used in German-speaking countries.

Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
