Ektomykorrhiza

Form of a fungus-plant symbiosis; see under mycorrhiza.

Term (mýkēs = fungus, rhiza = root) for the symbiosis (living community) between fungi and the root system of higher plants (flowering plants), in which a fungus is in contact with the fine root system of a plant. The fungus lives in the root bark of the host and also penetrates the bark cells. This has positive effects for the host plant, such as the vine, because it is better supplied with phosphorus (phosphate), nitrogen (in the form of nitrates and ammonium) and other nutrients and the soil is better developed.
