The "Sanitätsrat Dr. Hermann" winery is located in the municipality of Ürzig (Bernkastel area) in the German Moselle wine-growing region. Viticulture has been practised in the family for several centuries. Today's winery was founded in 1967 as a result of the division of the Joh. Jos. Christoffel Erben estate. The production site was moved from Ürzig to Erden with the construction of a new cellar. Since 1974, the estate has been run by Rudi Hermann, who has been assisted in the vineyard and especially in the cellar by his son Christian since 2000. The vineyards cover 6.3 hectares in the Herrenberg and Treppchen (Erden), Würzgarten (Ürzig), Försterlay (Lösnich) and Rosenberg (Kinheim) sites. In the vineyard, great importance is attached to nature-oriented care and selective harvesting in several passes by hand. After a gentle pressing and a long fermentation process of six to 12 weeks in stainless steel tanks, the wines mature on the fine le es without oxygen contact. In suitable years, high-predicate wines are also produced. Among the top wines are those from the Treppchen and Würzgarten vineyards, which are made from ungrafted Riesling vines. The others are largely marketed as "Dr. Hermann Gutsriesling". Around 80% of the production volume is exported, mainly to the USA, Japan and Great Britain.
