The name goes back to a spice garden, such as many communities created in the Middle Ages for the preparation of spiced wines. According to a document from the 13th century, the feudal vintner Godefridus Th. Wurzegard was in possession of such a spice garden. To commemorate the connection between the herb garden and the vineyard, a show wort garden was planted on the steep slope of the site in 2005. In 1971, in the course of land consolidation, the two previously independent individual vineyards Krank(en)lay and Sonnenuhr were incorporated and managed as Gewanne. In 2015, Kranklay was registered as a cadastral site under the name Kranklei.
