The winery is located in the municipality of Cantenac in the Margaux area of the Médoc (Haut-Médoc, Bordeaux). Its origins date back to 1650, when it was owned by Etienne Monteil, the canon of Saint-Émilion. It was from this family that François-Antoine Pouget inherited it in 1748, giving it its current name. His daughter Claire married a Pierre-François de Chavaille and the Pouget de Chavaille family ran the estate for the next century and a half. Since 1906, the estate has been owned by the Elie-Guillemet family, who also own Château Boyd-Cantenac. Until 1982, both wines were produced there and Pouget was treated as the second label of Boyd-Cantenac. Since the 1983 vintage, Pouget has been vinified in a separate facility. In the 1855 Bordeaux classification, it was awarded fourth place (Quatrième Grand Cru Classé), although some sources mention the name Château Pouget-Lassale. The vineyards cover ten hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). The extremely long-lasting red wine matures for up to 18 months in 50% new barriques. The second wine is called "Antoine Pouget" (formerly "Château La Tour Hassac").
