Champagne base wine

See under base wine.

The terms "base wine" and "processed wine" do not appear in EU law and are therefore not defined in EU law. The "base wine" for the production of sparkling wine products is referred to as "cuvée" in the EU. However, there is a passage in German wine law on base wine (previously processing wine):

1) Wine intended for the production of wine labelled "European Community wine" or blends of wines from several countries of the European Union.

2 ) Wine for the production of sparkling wine or quality sparkling wine without grape variety indication.

3) Wine for the production of wine for distilling, wine vinegar, non-alcoholic or alcohol-reduced wine or sparkling beverages, wine-based beverages, aromatised wines or other foodstuffs that are not products within the meaning of the Wine Law....
