Cantabria (ES)
Cantabrie (F)
Cantabria (GB)
Cantábria (PO)
Autonomous region in northern Spain between the Cantabrian Mountains and the Bay of Biscay. It is surrounded by Asturias, Castilla y León and the Basque Country and belongs to the so-called "Green Spain". In contrast to the other regions, viticulture here has no centuries-old tradition. This is mainly due to the deep and humid soil caused by frequent rainfall. Therefore, cattle breeding and agriculture with maize and potatoes are in the foreground here

The preferred alcoholic drinks here are the cider known as "Sidar" and the marc spirit "Orujo lebaniego". Since the 1990s, however, there have been efforts to expand viticulture. There are two IGP zones, Costa de Cantabria and Líebana, but no DO zones yet. Mainly the red wine varieties Alfrocheiro, Hondarribi Beltza, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as the white wine varieties Hondarribi Zuri (but see there) and Picapoll Blanco are cultivated.
