The winery is located in the municipality of Dernau in the German wine-growing region of Ahr. It was founded in 1910 by Gottfried Sebastian. Since 1998, the winery has been run by the sisters Andrea Bertram and Ricarda Sebastian. After completing an internship at the Meyer-Näkel winery in Dernau (2009), a Bachelor of Science degree in viticulture and oenology at Geisenheim University of Applied Sciences (2012) and the role of "German Wine Queen" as an ambassador for German wine (2013), daughter Julia Bertram vinified the first wine line of 1.3 hectares of vines in 2014. Since 2019, the business has been run by Benedikt Bertram and Julia Baltes.
The vineyards cover 7.5 hectares of vines in the single vineyard sites Burggarten, Hardtberg, Pfarrwingert and Schieferlay (Dernau), Mönchberg (Mayschoss) and Trotzenberg (Marienthal), Daubhaus, Forstberg and Rosenthal (Ahrweil), as well as Kirchtürmchen and Sonnenberg (Bad Neuenahr), some of which are very steep. They are 95% planted with Pinot Noir, the estate's favourite variety, and some Frühburgunder (Pinot Noir ), some of which are very old vines.
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
