This stage in the grapevine’s annual growth cycle begins six to eight weeks after budbreak. The timing depends on the annual temperature trend, the cumulative temperature at the specific site, and the growth patterns typical of the variety under changing weather conditions. Consistently warm temperatures combined with a good water supply accelerate shoot growth and thus the formation of the inflorescence (Latin: inflorescence, also known as a blossom, cluster, bunch or panicle) at the third to seventh shoot node.
