Bastardo Magarachsky

The red grape variety is a new variety between Bastardo (Trousseau Noir) x Saperavi. Synonyms are Bastard de Magaraci, Bastardo Magarach, Bastardo Magaratchskii, Bastardo Magaratchsky, Bastard of Magarach, Magarat(s)ch 217 and Magarach Bastardo. The cross was made in 1949 at the Magarach Viticultural Institute in the Crimea (Ukraine) by grower N. Paponov and V. Zotov. Variety protection was granted in 1969. The vine is resistant to both types of mildew and drought. It is mainly used as a blend, for example by the Solnechnaya Dolina winery in Crimea. In 2016, 180 hectares of vineyards were recorded in Moldova (Kym Anderson).
