Bastardo Magarachsky

The red grape variety is a new variety between Bastardo (Trousseau Noir) x Saperavi. Synonyms are Bastard de Magaraci, Bastardo Magarach, Bastardo Magaratchskii, Bastardo Magaratchsky, Bastard von Magaratsch, Magarat(s)ch 217 and Magarach Bastardo. The cross was made in 1949 at the Magarach Viticultural Institute in the Crimea (Ukraine) by the breeders N. Paponov and V. Zotov. The protection of the variety was granted in 1969. The vine is resistant to both powdery mildew and drought. It is mainly used as blending, for example by the Solnechnaya Dolina wine estate in the Crimea. However, in 2016, only 180 hectares of vineyards were declared in Moldova (statistics Kym Anderson).
