The red grape variety is an interspecific new variety between Carter x Black Hamburg(Schiava Grossa). Synonyms are Barry Blau and Rogers 43, and genes from Vitis labrusca and Vitis vinifera are included. The hybrid was crossed in 1864 in the USA by the private breeder E. S. Rogers in Salem/Massachusetts. By the way, the variety Herbert was created with the same parents. It is an all-female grape variety, therefore it is dependent on cross-pollination. The vine is used as a wine press and table grape. No stocks were reported in 2010 (Kym Anderson).
