Rogers E. S

The US-American biologist E. S. Rogers was active on a large scale as a grapevine breeder in Salem (Massachusetts). He created a large number of new varieties of wine grapes and table gra pes around the middle of the 19th century. Most of these were interspecific crosses between European and American varieties, i.e. hybrids. He liked to use the varieties Muscat d'Hamburg and Schiava Grossa (Trollinger), as well as the Isabella seedling Carter. These included the new varieties Agawam (Rogers 15), Aminia (Rogers 39), Barry (Rogers 43), Goethe (Rogers 1), Herbert (Rogers 44), Lindley (Rogers 9) and Salem (Rogers 22).

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
