The origin of the red grape variety is unknown. The name is derived from the leaf shape, which resembles the foot of a goose. Synonyms are Argan, Argant, Blue Goosefoot, Bockshorn, Buchser, Erlenbacher, Espagnol, Goosefoot, Gros Margillien, Big Red, Margillien and Pointed-leaf Garideli grape. According to a hypothesis of the agronomist Lambert J. von Babo (1790-1862), the goosefoot is supposed to be identical with the ancient grape variety Biturica mentioned by Columella (1st century AD).
