Gänsfüßer

The origin of the red grape variety is unknown. The name is derived from the leaf shape, which resembles the foot of a goose. Synonyms are Argan, Argant, Blue Goosefoot, Bockshorn, Buchser, Erlenbacher, Espagnol, Goosefoot, Gros Margillien, Big Red, Margillien and Pointed-leaf Garideli grape. According to a hypothesis of the agronomist Lambert J. von Babo (1790-1862), the goosefoot is supposed to be identical with the ancient grape variety Biturica mentioned by Columella (1st century AD). According to DNA analyses, the Blue Goosefoot is the father variety of the old Styrian Blue Cinnamon Grape as well as the Burgundian variety César. However, there is no relationship to the French variety Barbaroux (synonym Hellroter Gänsfüßer). The Gänsfüßer was one of the most popular varieties in Rhineland-Palatinate in the 16th century. In 1546, the botanist Hieronymus Bock Hieronymus (1498-1554) mentioned the "Genssfüssel" in his main work "Das Kreütter Buch", with the place name "Newenstatt" (Neustadt in der Pfalz). In 1584, the Elector of the Palatinate Johann Casimir (1543-1592) decreed that no vineyard could be cut out of it unless a corresponding replacement was planted with this variety. The synonym Erlenbacher refers to the Swiss village of Erlenbach on Lake Zurich in the canton of Basle Country, where it is still cultivated today.
