The winery is located in the municipality of Sardón de Duero (Valladolid province) in the Spanish region of Castilla y León as an enclave within the DO area of Ribera del Duero. The total estate on the left bank of the Duero comprises 560 hectares of land around the Premonstratensian monastery "Nuestra Señora Santa María de Retuerta", built in the 12th century. It has been converted into a hotel called "Le Domaine". The estate was acquired in 1988 by the pharmaceutical company Sandoz, which became the multi Novartis in 1996 through a merger with Ciba-Geigy. The historic vineyard, which had already been cultivated by the monks in the Middle Ages, was reactivated. In 1994, the oenologist and agronomist Pascal Delbeck, who comes from Saint-Émilion and who has been active as a consultant in many wineries around the world, was commissioned to build up the vineyard.
