The winery is located in the town of Krems in the Lower Austrian wine-growing region of Kremstal. Its origins date back to the 13th century. Ownership of a vineyard by the town of Krems can be traced back to 1452, making it one of the oldest wineries in Austria. Until 1744, the wine cellar and pressing facilities were housed under the town hall, then in the cellar of the "Corporis Christi" brotherhood. In 1915, the town of Krems acquired a cellar in the town moat, and the estate wines have been pressed there ever since. In 2003, Fritz Miesbauer, previously managing director of Freie Weingärtner Wachau for many years, took over the management. Peter Rethaller is responsible as cellar master. Extensive investments were made in the cellar technology.
