The red grape variety originates from Greece. Synonyms are Vafissa, Vaphtra, Vapsa, Vautra and Vavtra. The parentage is unknown. Nothing is known about possible genetic relations to the two varieties Mandilaria (with synonym Vaftra) or Vaftra Aspri (possibly a mutation or vice versa). The variety yields dark-coloured red wines and is mainly used as a teinturier (colouring grape). The variety is cultivated on Antiparos, a subsidiary island of Paros. However, no stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).
