The red grape variety originates from Greece (from islands in the eastern Aegean). Synonyms are Amorgiano, Amorghiano, Black Doumpraina, Dombrena Mavri, Domvrena Mavri, Doubraina Mavri, Doubrena Mavri, Doumbrena Mavri, Doumpraina Mavri, Doumprena Mavri, Doympraina Mavre, Doympraina Mavro, K'ntoura Kai M'ntoura, Kontoura, Koudouro, Koutoura, Koutouro, Koundoura Mavri, Koundouro, Kountoura, Kountoura Mavri, Koyntoura, Kytoura, Mandelaria, Mantilari, Mantilaria, Montoyra, Papoudes, Tsoumbrena Mavri and Tsoumpraina Mavri.

Parentage

The ancestry (parentage) is unknown; the parent varieties are probably already extinct. According to DNA analyses, the white Savatiano variety is not a colour mutation of Mandilaria (or vice versa), as the synonyms Kountoura Aspri and Kountoura Mavri might suggest.
