The red grape variety originates from Greece (from islands in the eastern Aegean). Parentage

The ancestry (parentage) is unknown; the parent varieties are probably already extinct. According to DNA analyses, the white Savatiano variety is not a colour mutation of Mandilaria (or vice versa), as the synonyms Kountoura Aspri and Kountoura Mavri might suggest.
