Term for cooperage, which is derived from tonneau (barrel). The term "tonnellerie" refers to both the business and the traditional craft of producing wooden barrels, particularly from oak, but also other types of wood. Tonnellerie is a key area of wine, spirits and, in some cases, beer production, as wooden barrels have a significant influence on the ageing and maturation process. This industry is particularly well represented in France, where a significant barrel culture has developed over the centuries.
The world's largest barrel maker is the French company Seguin Moreau, which belongs to the Œneo Group and is one of the leading international manufacturers of oak barrels in various designs. Other well-known producers include Berthomieu, Cadus, Demptos, France Chêne, Radoux, Sansaud, Taransaud and Vicard. There are also numerous other traditional companies, particularly in France, which produce barrels for renowned wine regions such as Bordeaux and Burgundy as well as for the international market.
