Abbreviation used mainly in the Italian region of Veneto, also "Tappo Spago", for a special cork stopper of Frizzante (semi-sparkling wine). Sparkling wine under 3 bar carbon dioxide pressure is exempt from any sparkling wine tax. Since the presentation of the bottle such as mushroom cork and agraffe (wire basket) was also used as a criterion for taxation, the winegrowers closed the bottle with a normal cork and fixed it with the spago (string, spagat, cord). In the meantime, due to modern bottling equipment, the corks would also hold without the spago, but the custom was retained for traditional and aesthetic reasons.
In the past, you needed a wealth of encyclopaedias and specialist literature to keep up to date in your vinophile professional life. Today, Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one of my best helpers and can rightly be called the "bible of wine knowledge".
