Soil erosion

Term (Latin erodere = to gnaw away) for the process in the rock cycle including the erosion and gouging of the earth's surface by flowing water, wind or glaciers. In viticulture, this is a consequence of large-scale monocultures. Vineyards are often planted on slopes, so the surface is constantly being carried downhill by rain and wind. In order to stop erosion, a targeted cover crop is often carried out to stabilise the soil surface.
