The history of the "Nikolaihof Wachau" winery in Mautern in the Wachau wine-growing region goes back two thousand years; it is one of the oldest farms in Austria. The buildings are partly built on Roman foundations. In the courtyard are remains of the early Christian Agapitus Basilica, where a synod was held under Bishop Pilgrim of Passau in 985 AD. A military camp for Charlemagne (742-814) was once built in the Burggarten area. The former Freihof was first mentioned in a document in 1075 as the central seat of the estate administration of the Passau monastery of St. Nikola. Today's chapel was built by the Augustinian canons. Today, receptions and wine tastings are held under the restored Gothic vault of the rededicated chapel. The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
