Plant sleeves

Box-shaped or tubular casings (also known as protective plant sleeves, protective trousers) between 35 and 80 centimetres high, which are pressed into the ground and fixed to the planting rod. In this way the vine is wrapped quite tightly up to the desired height. It is very important that the sheaths are firmly anchored in the soil (at least 15 to 20 centimetres deep), otherwise a negative chimney effect will occur. The material used is high-quality cardboard or plastic, some brands have a low aluminium content (like packaging in the beverage industry) and are reusable. There are also translucent materials, which is necessary in certain wine-growing areas. In the New World, such planting aids have been used in young plants and new plantations since the early 1990s. There have been trial applications in Europe, for example in the German growing regions of Rheinhessen and Mosel, in Austria and in Luxembourg.

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
