The "Cantina Pira Luigi" winery is located in the municipality of Serralunga d'Alba (province of Cuneo) in the Italian region of Piedmont on the slope of a huge valley basin. It was founded in 1950 by the couple Rosa and Luigi Pira, who at that time were mainly involved in tending the vineyard, selling the grapes and producing a few bottles of wine. After their children joined the business, the winery was modernised in the 1990s and began its own production and marketing. One aspiration was to produce high-quality Barolo. Today, the winery is run by Gianpaolo Pira, assisted by his brothers Romolo and Claudio.
The vineyards cover 13 hectares of vines in the Vigna Marenca, Vigna Margheria and Vigna Rionda sites. No grapes are bought in. Only red wine varieties are cultivated and processed; these are Barbera, Nebbiolo and Dolcetto. Quality-enhancing measures include foliage care and thinning out to reduce yields. The product range includes various DOCG Barolo wines, as well as DOC Dolcetto d'Alba, Barbera d'Alba and Langhe Nebbiolo.
