The red grape variety originates from Italy. Synonyms are Gonfaus, Nero di Bosa, Nieddu Polchino, Nieddu Polchinu, Plant de Vic98 N4 and Ripa. The parentage is unknown. It is possibly identical to the Spanish variety Gonfaus. The VIVC catalogue does not list Gonfaus as an independent variety, but only as a synonym for Nigheddu Polchinu. It is a purely female grape variety. The late-maturing vine is cultivated in small quantities in Sardinia. No stocks were reported in 2016 (Kym Anderson statistics).

The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
