Gonfaus

The red grape variety originates from Spain or Italy. Its parentage is unknown. It is possibly identical to the Italian variety Nigheddu Polchinu (with the synonym Gonfaus). The VIVC catalogue does not list Gonfaus as an independent variety, but only as a synonym for Nigheddu Polchinu. It is a purely female grape variety. The variety, which was almost extinct after the phylloxera catastrophe, was rediscovered in 1998 near the town of Santa Eulalia de Puigoriol (province of Barcelona) in the Catalonia region and named after the "Quintà of Gonfaus" area. It was replanted by the Torres winery as part of a reactivation programme for old, indigenous varieties. The vine is extremely resistant to drought. It produces acidic, cherry-red red wines with balanced tannins and a fruity flavour. However, no stocks were designated in 2016 (Kym Anderson).
