The winery "Bodegas Montecillo S.A." is located in the municipality of Fuenmayor in the heart of the Spanish Rioja sub-region Rioja Alta. It was founded in 1874 by Don Celestino Navajas Matute. Since 1973, it has been owned by the sherry producer Osborne, who then made major investments in 1975. María Martínez is responsible for the vinification. There is no own vineyard, all grapes are bought and selected according to strict criteria. From mainly the varieties Mazuelo, Tempranillo and Viura(Macabeo) 85% of the red wines are made. 30,000 barrique barrels are available for ageing, the tank capacity is 40,000 hectolitres. Premium wines include Viña Monty, Viña Cumbrero and the Especial, which is only produced in the best years from the best red grapes. 3.3 million bottles (275,000 cases) of wine are produced annually. About half of this goes into export.
The glossary is a monumental achievement and one of the most important contributions to wine knowledge. Of all the encyclopaedias I use on the subject of wine, it is by far the most important. That was the case ten years ago and it hasn't changed since.
