The white grape variety originates from the Iberian Peninsula. The name means "laurel" and refers to the flavour of the berries. Synonyms are Amarnate, Arinto, Arinto Branco, Basto, Branco Redondo, Branco Redondos, Cheiro, Donrada, Dorado, Dourada, Dourado, Loureiro Blanco, Loureiro Branco (Portugal); Baiao, Loeireiro Blanco, Loureira, Loureira Blanca, Loureiro Blanco, Marqués, Marquez, Rutherglen Pedro (Spain).
