Main wine

Formerly common term for an outstanding wine of a special vintage. Today, this is a not exactly defined designation without wine-legal meaning for a wine of special quality (figurehead, flagship, premium wine, signature wine). But it is also used for a producer's most important product in terms of volume. For the former, the term grand vin is commonly used in France; the somewhat simpler wines are called second wines. Similarly, however, Hauptwein refers to a wine that is used as the main quantity or as the dominant component in a cuvée (a blend). See also under top vintage and top wine.
