Because of the use of the name, which both countries historically claimed for themselves, there was a long-standing dispute between Greece and Macedonia, which was finally peacefully ended in 2018 (see also under Macedonia). On 12 February 2019, the former Yugoslav constituent republic and subsequently independent state of Macedonia was officially renamed as Northern Macedonia (Republika Severna Makedonija).
