Lagler Karl

The winery is located in the municipality of Spitz an der Donau in the Wachau (Lower Austria) wine growing region. The family has been resident here since 1789. They also run a hotel in the middle of the vineyards and a wine tavern. The business is run by Karl and Elisabeth Lagler and son Karl junior. The vineyards cover 13.5 hectares of vines in the areas Atzberg, Axpoint, Burgberg, Gasselreith, Hartberg, Setzberg, Steinborz, Tausendeimerberg and Vorderseiber. About two thirds are terraced and lie on primary rock weathered soils. They are 90% planted with the white wine varieties Grüner Veltliner (40%), Riesling (25%), Gelber Muskateller,Pinot Blanc, Neuburger, Müller-Thurgau and Sauvignon Blanc, and 10% with Zweigelt.

The vineyards are cultivated in a natural, environmentally friendly manner with reduced pruning, careful leaf care, thinning out in summer and selective manual harvesting. Fermentation is temperature-controlled in stainless steel tanks and, depending on the variety and wine quality, the wine is aged in traditional large wooden barrels or in stainless steel tanks. The premium wines of the house are "Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Steinborz", "Riesling Smaragd Steinborz", "Riesling Smaragd 1000-Eimerberg", "Grüner Veltliner Selection Elisabeth", "Riesling Federspiel von den Terrassen" and "Sauvignon Blanc Smaragd Hartberg". About 75,000 bottles of wine are produced annually. Grape juice and bottle-fermented sparkling wine are also produced. The winery is a member of Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus.
