Kaolin (also known as Spanish clay, porcelain clay or China clay) is obtained from kaolin clay. Named after the Chinese mountain Kaoling, this white, fine-grained rock or aluminium silicate is also used in the production of porcelain and paper. Kaolin is also used in viticulture in a variety of ways. It is said that the Romans used Spanish earth in ancient times to improve purity.
It is used extensively, especially in organic viticulture, as a natural and environmentally friendly (non-toxic) plant protection and strengthening agent. It is finely ground and sprayed as a suspension on the leaves and grapes of the vines. The main applications are
