Hochrain

A vineyard or site in the municipality of Wösendorf (Weißenkirchen) in the Lower Austrian wine-growing region of Wachau. It lies between the cadastral municipalities of St. Michael and Wösendorf on the ridges of the Danube valley. One of the sub-groves is called Ralais. The southeast-facing, steeply terraced vineyards with slopes of up to 65% cover 22 hectares of vineyards at 215 to 290 metres above sea level. They consist of crystalline rock soils with sandy loess layers and 20% lime concentration in the topsoil, which have a good water retention capacity. Here, mainly the Grüner Veltliner variety is cultivated. Members of the Domäne Wachau winegrowers' cooperative and the Hirtzberger Franz, Jamek Josef, Machherndl, Pichler Franz and Pichler Rudi wineries, for example, have shares in the vineyard.

There is a vast number of sources on the web where one can acquire knowledge about wine. But none has the scope, timeliness and accuracy of the information in the encyclopaedia at wein.plus. I use it regularly and rely on it.
