This event was initiated in 1987 by the Charta Rheingau Association. When the Charta Rheingau was absorbed into the VDP-Rheingau in 1999, the VDP-Rheingau also took over the organization. The event used to last three days, but now it lasts for over a week in November. As a prelude, the Rheingau VDP winegrowers present the wines of the vintage harvested the previous year and also older vintages. The charter wines have been especially emphasized as food accompaniments. Various events related to wine, food and culture are held in various Rheingau communities.

In the past, the auction in Eberbach Monastery, organised on the model of the Hospices de Beaune, was also held in this context. In the meantime, this has been brought forward and is already taking place in September. At the 24th Glorious Rheingau Days in 2010, there was a record attendance of more than 4,300 guests at 35 events. Among the highlights were an International Riesling Symposium at Schloss Reinhartshausen, where wine experts, authors, sommeliers and wine specialists from all over the world took part in international Riesling tastings and lectures, and the Riesling Gala at Kloster Eberbach.
