The winery is located in the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga (Province of Siena) in the southeasternmost part of the Chianti-Classico area in the Italian region of Tuscany. It was acquired by Domenico Poggiali in 1961. In the meantime the neighbouring Pagliarese vineyard has also been purchased. The managing director is Guiseppe Mazzocolin, married to Gloria Poggiali. Franco Bernabei is responsible for the cellar and Agostino Buracchi for the vineyards. The vineyards cover 57 hectares. The premium wines include three 100% varietal IGT wines. These are the "Maestro Raro"(Cabernet Sauvignon) made from old vines, "Fontalloro"(Sangiovese) from the Monopol vineyard of the same name and the "I Sistri"(Chardonnay) which is aged in barrique. Other top products are the DOCG wines "Chianti Classico Riserva Berardenga" (100% Sangiovese), the "Chianti Classico Riserva Rancia" (without "G"), named after the old Benedictine monastery "Grancia", and the traditional sweet wine "Vin Santo del Chianti Classico". Grappa (marc spirit) and olive oil are also produced.
In the past, you needed a wealth of encyclopaedias and specialist literature to keep up to date in your vinophile professional life. Today, Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one of my best helpers and can rightly be called the "bible of wine knowledge".
