The white grape variety comes from Italy. Synonyms are Bigolara, Bigolona Bianca, Bigolona Veronese, Sampagna and Smarzirola. The variety was first mentioned in 1818 in the Valpolicella area in Veneto. The medium-ripening, high-yielding vine is susceptible to botrytis (noble rot), which is used to produce sweet wines such as Vin Santo and Passito. This variety, which is threatened with extinction, has been reactivated with the support of the Conegliano Viticultural Institute and is now being cultivated again in small quantities. In 2016, no stocks were recorded (statistics Kym Anderson).
In the past, you needed a wealth of encyclopaedias and specialist literature to keep up to date in your vinophile professional life. Today, Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one of my best helpers and can rightly be called the "bible of wine knowledge".
