Wine author and critic Nicolas Belfrage (*1940) grew up in New York and London and studied French and Italian at University College London. He initially worked in the wine trade. He is considered an expert on Italian wines and is also responsible for the Italian section of Hugh Johnson's "The Little Johnson". In 1980, he passed the Masters of Wine examination. Belfrage is a regular contributor to Decanter Magazine, World of Fine Wine, Wine Gourmet, Harpers Wine and Spirit Trade Review, Tom Stevenson's annual Wine Report and Oz Clarke's Pocket Wine Book. His best-known publications are the wine books Life Beyond Lambrusco (1985), Barolo to Valpolicalla: The Wines of Northern Italy (1999), Brunello to Zibibbo: The Wines of Tuscany, Central and Southern Italy (2001) and The Finest Wines of Tuscany and Central Italy (2009).
