A term (also water shoot, water shoot, water shoot) for secondary shoots on the vine that have formed from a "dormant eye". Normal fruiting shoots form from the axillary buds that remain on the one-year-old wood as winter eyes after pruning. In contrast, water shoots form from adventitious buds on the perennial wood, which are not already laid down but are newly formed from reembryonalised cells of the cambium as required. An old term is "brain shoot", which refers to the head. The buds often form at the head of the main stem. This is the point where the vine is pruned back to one or two canes or cones during winter pruning. In contrast, secondary shoots that form at the bottom of the trunk (base) or the roots are known as basal shoots or root shoots.
