Advent bud

The Latin term "adventive" (engl. added) means in plants that additional shoots from newly formed, adventive eyes (buds) can form in unusual places of stems, roots, stems and leaves not provided for in the building plan. In contrast to the standard axillary buds (axillary buds), they were not previously created. Normally, mechanical causes such as tissue injuries, frostbite or cuts are required to stimulate the formation of adventitious buds in the still intact tissue. Some tree species form new shoots from the root brood after clear cutting (blackthorn, willow), others sprout new shoots on the stump as canes (hazel). In the past, after a severe winter, many vines sprouted again in this way from the rootstock, although the above-ground parts were frozen. This could be allowed without any problems before the invasion of vines. In the case of the vine, such adventitious buds, also known as "sleeping eyes", form the so-called water shoots on the old wood. See a list of keywords relevant to vines under vine.
