Photosynthesis

Term (phos = light and sýnthesis = composition) for the production of energy-rich biomolecules using light energy. The chloroplasts (organ cells), in which the chlorophyll (leaf green) is located, are responsible for this. Colouring agents (chlorophyll, carotenoids, flavonoids) in leaves or other green parts of the plant use solar radiation as an energy source to produce carbohydrate compounds. In the process, carbon dioxide from the air and water are converted into sugar, while oxygen is released. Plants bind around 150 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide and produce 400 billion tonnes of oxygen on earth every year.

The physico-chemical process of osmosis plays an essential role by enabling the transport of water and nutrients required for photosynthesis.
