Antique Wine Company

The Antique Wine Company, an English wine merchant headquartered in London, was founded in 1982 by Stephen Williams (*1954). The company had around 20,000 customers in around 70 countries. Following a legal dispute over the alleged sale of counterfeit wines, the company suffered considerable financial losses, which led to its liquidation in 2016. In the end, the company only employed 12 people in London. The company had specialised in wines of exceptional quality from old vintages. The company's own cellars stored 10,000 bottles of special vintages. Extensive lots of renowned wines were regularly acquired.

Range of services

The range of services included wine trading, auctions of rare wines, special wine events, private masterclasses, cellar planning (for the financially strong) and various special services such as the search for very special and expensive wines/vineyards/vintages on request. A wine bottle authentication service was offered in collaboration with the University of Bordeaux. Ion beam analysis is used to determine the age of the bottle or glass. This is intended to uncover or prevent the repeated manipulation and wine adulteration that occurs when very expensive and old vintages are sold.
