Andorra

The Principality of Andorra (Catalan: Principat d'Andorra) is a parliamentary co-principality with the capital Andorra la Vella, located in south-west Europe in the eastern Pyrenees. It covers 468 km² and borders France to the north and east and Spain to the south and west. According to legend, Charlemagne (751-771) founded Andorra in 788 in gratitude for the help of its inhabitants in the fight against the Moors. It has been independent since 1278.

History

Viticulture in Andorra has a long but rather unknown history. The Romans brought viticulture to the Pyrenees in ancient times, and there is evidence that wine has been produced in Andorra since the Middle Ages. However, due to the mountainous landscape and the climatic challenges, viticulture has always been a small niche. It is only in recent decades that viticulture has been revitalised in Andorra.
