One of the sites classified as Grand Cru in Alsace (Haut-Rhin) within the Alsace Grand Cru appellation. Also known as "Sonnenkoepflé", the site owes its name to the worship of the sun, which was vzeremonised in pagan times. The vineyards cover 69 hectares of vines on shell limestone and sandstone soil in the two communes of Soultzmatt and Westhalten. In the sunny, low-rainfall climate, Gewürztraminer in particular thrives, as well as Pinot Gris and Riesling. Well-known producers are Domaine Léon Boesch, Jean-Marie Haag, Seppi Landmann, Landmann-Ostholt, Francis Muré, Eric Rominger and Schlegel-Boeglin.
As honorary chairman of the Domäne Wachau, it is the easiest and quickest way for me to access the wein.plus encyclopaedia when I have questions. The certainty of receiving well-founded and up-to-date information here makes it an indispensable guide.
