The term tithe (cent, tenth, tithe) is derived from the Latin "decenia" and refers to a tax of about ten percent in the form of money or in kind. The tax had to be paid to religious (especially the Roman Catholic Church and its monasteries) or secular (landlords and rulers) institutions. A tithe is already mentioned in the Bible in the 5th Book of Moses (Deuteronomy) as the yield from grain, oil and wine, as well as from the first-born of cattle and sheep.
