There are 40 synonyms; the most important are Blauer Greutler, Gutblaue, Blauer Kracher, Blauer Kräutler, Dioljak, Echter Blauer Wildbacher, Grätler, Großes Mauserl, Mali Zherni, Mauserl, Melbertraube, Mittelblauer, Pticnik Crni, Schilcher, Schilchertraube, Schillertraube, Schlechte Blaue, Schlehenblaue, Schlehenblauer Wildbacher, Tizhnik, Vildbasske, Vranek, Wildbacher and Wildbacher Nero.

Blauer Wildbacher has been documented since the 16th century. For example, it is mentioned in the famous wine book by Johann Rasch (1540-1612) published in 1580. The main name is derived from the municipality of Wildbach near Deutschlandsberg in Styria. It was here that it was classified for the first time in 1841.
