Producers and Wine Reviews about the "VR Tejo"

Wine-growing region in the centre of Portugal northeast of Lisbon. Until 2009 it was called Ribatejo. It is the only inland area that lies between Lisboa in the west and Alentejo in the east. The fertile alluvial soils near the river are mainly used to grow vegetables, fruit and rice. The area is therefore nicknamed "Lisbon's garden". The River Tagus, which strongly shapes the landscape, was for a long time the traditional supply route to bring products from the inland to the port city of Lisbon. The huge area covers 25,000 hectares on both banks of the eponymous river, classified as an IGP area (country wines) under the name Tejo (formerly Ribatejana).

The best vineyard oaks are located further away from the riverbed in the hinterland on poor, sandy soils with granite and slate subsoil. Around 2,500 hectares are classified as DOC area Do Tejo (until 2009 Ribatejo). From the DOC classification in 2000 (still under the old name Ribatejo), there was a qualitative upswing. This is divided into the six sub-areas of Almeirim, Cartaxo (part of which is also Lisboa), Chamusca, Coruche, Santarém and Tomar. The climate is characterised by hot and dry summers. In winter, artificial irrigation is sometimes necessary.
