Schieler

A wine from the German growing region of Saxony with pale to light red color. The winery Richter Vincenz in Meißen (Saxony) had this designation protected as a brand name. In the meantime, it can generally be used in Saxony. The origin is presumed to be the Saxon pronunciation for "Schüler", as only those who could afford this inexpensive wine could afford the quality wine from the esteemed (the "gentlemen"). A second interpretation refers to the fact that the wine "shimmers" in the glass.

The wine must be produced from a grape or must mixture of freely usable red and white varieties from Saxony. It is classified in Germany as the group Rotling, but may not be referred to as Rosé. The designation may also be used for a quality sparkling wine or quality sparkling wine, provided these products are made only from wine from Saxony. According to EU regulations, it is a protected traditional term that meets the conditions of a quality wine (g.U.).
