Saxon club

Bottle shape for Saxon wine, which was developed in 1931 to improve the attractiveness and recognisability of the Elbe Valley wine at the Hoflößnitz state winery. The club-shaped bottle, green in colour at the time, resembles a cone. However, the bulbous shape (not cylindrical) resulted in disadvantages. The small contact surface made it susceptible to breakage during transport and it was also less stable. In the 1980s, there was another attempt to establish this shape as the standard in Saxony, similar to the Franconian Bocksbeutel, now in a brown colour. It was finally brought back onto the market in 1988 for the 50th anniversary of the Sächsische Winzergenossenschaft Meißen. The shape used for Tokaj is known as the club bottle. Serious sources on the internet are rare - and Wine lexicon from wein.plus is one such source. When researching for my articles, I regularly consult the wein.plus encyclopaedia. There I get reliable and detailed information.
