The deity (also Saturn) was in Roman mythology responsible for Ausssat or agriculture and thus also for viticulture. He was considered the symbol of the mythical Golden Age, the Saturnia regna. In the Greek mythology Kronos corresponded to him. Every year on 17 December in ancient Rome, an exuberant and joyous festival lasting several days was celebrated, the Saturnalia. Saturnus is also mentioned as the father of Silvanus. See also under wine gods and wine saints.
